Remembering the Past

The Cedar Community Association was founded around 1920 and the Cedar Community Hall was nick named the Speedway Hall because at that time  there was often horse races passing by the hall.

The original building was in downtown Cedar and burnt down. The land was then donated by a local farmer for the current hall and in 1922 the hall was finished.

The hall was used by the community and held regular events and dances.

Later, the annex was added to to the building and a list of residents who contributed to the addition had their names inscribed on bricks on the north wall of the annex.

Facts About Cedar Hall

    1. The Cedar Community Hall was built by the local Farmers’ Institute for the general benefit of the community in 1918. The original hall had a fire and was rebuilt in 1922. The Hall is managed by a non-profit association that is registered as a BC non-profit and has charitable status with Revenue Canada.
    2. The Hall is managed by a hands-on board of volunteers which oversees its operations, maintenance and repairs/renovations.
    3. The Board currently consists of eight members with diverse backgrounds and demographics. Collectively, board members contribute over 1,000 hours of volunteer time each year.
    4. It serves the community by way of a regulated Constitution. The hall is not a municipal property nor does it receive any ongoing operational funding from any government body; it exists only on the revenue that it generates through rentals.
    5. Through entities such as the RDN, the Hall regularly applies for grants for programs and specific capital projects not related to ongoing maintenance or repairs of the building. They are the same grants that other community organizations apply for.
Since 2005, Cedar Community Hall has been designated as a “reception center” by RDN and as such, would serve this purpose in any local or provincially declared emergency. It is through this designation that the hall was outfitted with a generator.
    6. Usage of the Hall has been steadily increasing over the past few years. In the last full year of operations, the Hall experienced a record amount of hall usage by non-profit and youth groups.
    7. The Hall is a place for community dinners, concerts and dances, for weddings and memorials, for groups like the Cedar Lions’ Club, Guides, Scouts and the drama group as well as activities such as art and music lessons, Tia Chi and other recreational activities.
